Facebook is too willing to censor political content from the right, but now, the site is preparing to restrict even more content on election night.
In a recent interview with Financial Times, Nick Clegg, Facebook’s head of global affairs, claimed that the platform is prepared to take “pretty exceptional measures to significantly restrict the circulation of content on our platform” following the presidential election.
Facebook is under pressure to “combat election-related misinformation, voter suppression and the incitement of violence on the November 3 election day and during the post-election period,” according to the Times.
“There are some break-glass options available to us if there really is an extremely chaotic and, worse still, violent set of circumstances,” said Clegg. But he did not elaborate on the specific measures that Facebook would be willing to take.
“We have acted aggressively in other parts of the world where we think that there is real civic instability and we obviously have the tools to do that [again],” Clegg said.
The company isn’t consistent about how it’s handling the election. “”I think we need to be doing everything that we can to reduce the chances of violence or civil unrest in the wake of this election.” said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. “We’re trying to make sure that we do our part to make sure that none of this is organized on Facebook.” Facebook pretends to care about promoting violence on the platform. It has not only allowed an event to harass Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), but also allowed the same group to remain on the site.
Just in the last few weeks, Facebook has removed or labelled multiple posts from President Donald Trump. On September 3, for example, Facebook flagged Trump’s post that told voters how to make sure their votes have been properly collected and tabulated. In August, Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg said that the platform is prepared to take down any of the president’s posts that violate its definition of “hate speech” or “misinformation.” The platform also removed a video of Trump discussing the effects of COVID-19 on children in the same month.
