Back in June, we reported that the son of NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had been arrested in the stabbing of a neighbor. Now, he has been officially charged for the stabbing, which occurred in a dispute over a trashcan.
NBC News reported that 28 year-old Adam Abdul-Jabbar is facing ten years in prison after being charged with three felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon and other crimes. The district attorney’s office said in a statement that he has been accused of stabbing his 60-year-old neighbor Ray Winsor with a large hunting knife and fracturing the man’s skull in the incident June 9, the Orange County, California.
The statement added that Windsor nearly died from blood loss after collapsing outside the emergency room where his wife drove him.
Prosecutors say that the disagreement between the pair began when Winsor became upset that Adam never brought his trash to the curb on trash day. During the argument, Adam suddenly pulled out a knife and stabbed Winsor seven times.

Shawn Holley, Adam’s attorney, said in a statement that it was the “complaining witness” who “initiated the altercation and it was Mr. Abdul-Jabbar who contacted the police to report it.”
“For these reasons and many more, we are disappointed that this case was filed, but stand ready to address the charges in court,” Holley said.
Winsor said afterward that he felt that Adam was always taking advantage of his elderly grandmother, with whom he lives.
“I sort of got on him because the lady who takes care of him is 83-years-old, he doesn’t do anything for her, and it just bums me out, she’s in a walker taking her trash cans down,” Winsor told ABC7.
He added that when he confronted Adam, the young man said, “Shut your f***ing mouth, I’m gonna stick a knife through your teeth.” That’s when the basketball legend’s son attacked him.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement that arguments between neighbors “should never escalate to violence.”
“Violence of any kind will not be tolerated in Orange County, and those who choose to inflict violence on others will be prosecuted by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office to the fullest extent of the law,” he said.
Kareem’s son is facing up to 10 years in prison.
