MacArthur Foundation 'Genius' Awards | National Review

The latest crop of Genius Awards have been made by the MacArthur Foundation. It appears to economics professor Richard Vedder that the awards are being given out less to reward genius than to make a political statement.

In this Minding the Campus article, Vedder writes, “More plausible, it seems to me, is that the MacArthur folks want to make a statement, showing their support and concern for underrepresented groups in the American scholarly and artistic community. Perhaps some of the MacArthur board or staff believe that white males are too often oppressors wallowing in privilege, needing to be brought down a notch, and also that Asian males are too much of a model minority to deserve major recognition.”

The MacArthur Foundation, Vedder shows, is another of those sad stories where a man who made his fortune in the free market has had his charity taken over by leftists who are intent on tearing down the system that made the man’s success possible and replacing it with a dirigiste system he’d have opposed.
