With America officially out of Afghanistan, the Taliban now have full control of the country, other than a few areas they are still overtaking. The history of the Taliban is one full of death, murder, and blood, which has many women and children fleeing for their lives, hoping to evacuate the country before they are caught. While the Taliban promises they are peaceful, a recent video of a news anchor surrounded by armed Taliban soldiers shows just how threatening this group is.

Although it might have appeared scripted, the Afghan television network Peace Studio was actually stormed by armed Taliban militants on Sunday. During the live broadcast, the news anchor was held hostage by the soldiers as he talked favorably about the new regime. The anchor repeatedly said, “Don’t be afraid.”
Breaking the news, Republic World reported, “With the Taliban militants breathing down his neck, the TV anchor addressed the news bulletin, talking about the collapse of the Ashraf Ghani-led government and the formation of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Visibly afraid and uncomfortable, the presenter then went on to tell the nation to not be scared of the Taliban.”

With the video going viral, many have commented on the dire situation Afghanistan now faces. BBC World News anchor Yalda Hakim tweeted the video below with the caption, “Afghanistan TV – surreal. This is what a political debate now looks like on Afghan TV, Taliban foot soldiers watching over the host. The presenter talks about the collapse of the Ghani govt & says the Islamic Emirate says the Afghan people should not be afraid.”

Again, the Taliban promises a peaceful transfer of power, but several reports prove otherwise. In recent days, the militants reportedly killed a relative of a journalist and also murdered a 33-year-old who worked with the U.S. Special Forces as a translator.

Sadly, that isn’t all as Republic World also noted, “the Taliban barred two women journalists … who worked with the public broadcaster Radio Television Afghanistan” and “also attacked two other members of the press for covering the anti-Taliban protests taking place in the eastern Nangarhar province.”
